Since 1973, the Mathewson family has been serving New London and the surrounding area in the burial vault and monument business.
My grandfather Richard started out with a the concrete burial vault business serving funeral homes in a 30 mile radius. The shop at that time was located on McKinley St. here in New London.
In 1950, my father "Dewey" continued the burial vault business along with my uncle Tom. They expanded the service area and built a new shop on Division St. next to the VFW. They serviced up to 1,200 burial vaults per year.
In 1976, my father and I developed the monument business alongside the burial vault line.
In 1980, we built our current location at 750 Industrial Loop Rod., New London used solely as manufacturing. I purchased the business from my father in 1982. In 1984, I purchased the former Markman's Grocery Store on North Water St. and used that location as our monument showroom.
In May of 1994, we services our last burial vault and since have worked exclusively in the monument business.
In 1994, the highway 45 by-pass was completed. In 1996, I decided to move our sales showroom to our current location to provide our customers with the most complete service, start to finish, along with easy access form the highway.
